Valheim Deep North survival guide

The Deep North is the last of Valheim’s 8 biomes. Every kind of weather there is freezing, day and night, so away from a fire and out of shelter you freeze unless you have frost resistance. Wear Fenris Coat or drink Frost Resistance Mead to stay warm. Arrive with your best Ashlands gear, such as Berserkir Axes and Flametal Armor. The biome adds 194 items and 16 creatures, and its boss, Kall Fimbulbringer, is fought in 3 phases.

  • Freezing all the time in all 3 kinds of weather
  • 47 new materials plus 29 moulds
  • 16 creatures and 11 kinds of place
  • Kall Fimbulbringer 3 phases

Before you go: the cold

How freezing works in the game code, and what keeps you warm.

Valheim checks the weather around you all the time. In freezing weather you are Freezing when you are neither near a fire nor in shelter. Near a fire but outside, or inside but away from a fire, you are only Cold. With a fire and a roof over you, you are warm. Frost resistance from any source cancels both, wherever you are, which is why it is the one thing to sort out before you sail north.

  • FreezingNo health regeneration, Stamina regeneration −60%, Eitr regeneration −60%, −1 health every 1 s, Resistant to fire. In the Deep North that is any time you are away from fire and shelter.

  • ColdHealth regeneration −50%, Stamina regeneration −25%, Eitr regeneration −25%. You cannot start resting while you are cold or freezing, so you cannot build up Rested out in the open.

  • Deep snow slows youOnce the snow is deeper than 0.3 m you slow down, up to 50% slower in snow 2 m deep.

  • Snow damages weak buildingsHeavy snow damages pieces whose support is below 60% of the way from red to green; your hammer shows them flashing blue there. See building support.

  • Bring a lightAesir Passage, Mörkhalla and Winding tunnels are always dark inside.

How Deep North gear is made

Most new weapons and armor go through a mould, a cast and the Frost Foundry.

Deep North gear is not crafted in one go. You find a mould, pour a cast of it at the forge, then harden the cast with frost. Here is the whole road for one weapon, read from its recipes:

  1. Mine Petrified Tissue at a Petrified Gammeltroll Petrified Tissue cannot go through a portal: carry it or sail it home.
  2. Smelt it into Bloodgold in a Blast Furnace
  3. Find a mould such as Mould: Nord Atgeir Mould: Nord Atgeir turns up in Memorial Site, Mörkhalla and Winding tunnels. The moulds table lists where every mould comes from.
  4. Cast Cast: Nord Atgeir at a Black Forge level 4 You learn the cast once you have picked up the mould and every other ingredient and used a level 4 Black Forge.
  5. Make Liquid Frost from Ice×5 in a Frigid Kiln
  6. Harden the cast into Nord Atgeir in the Frost Foundry A cast takes 50 seconds. The foundry burns 1 Liquid Frost every 10 seconds while it works.
  7. Add Frostfire Essence at the Black Forge for Frostfire Atgeir

Every recipe in Valheim appears once you have picked up each of its ingredients and used its station at the level it needs, so carrying a new mould home is what teaches you its cast.

Fire is the most common weakness here: 8 of these 16 take extra fire damage, while 9 resist frost. Each creature’s page ranks every weapon against it; the weakness chart has them all side by side.

New stations

What they cost and what they do.

Deep North upgrades for older stations

Smith's Aprons
Raises the Black Forge one level; costs Bloodgold×5 Timberwood×8 Moose Hide×2
Smoker
Raises the Cauldron one level; costs Bloodgold×5 Timberwood×6
Standing Loom
Raises the Galdr Table one level; costs Timberwood×5 Nornathread×10

A station’s level is 1 plus the number of different upgrades built near it, and many Deep North recipes need a high level: casts need a level 4 station. Each station page lists what every level unlocks.

Places in the Deep North

What each one is and what to expect inside.

Mörkhalla is the place to plan for: it is a dungeon you open with Intricate Key, its vegvisir marks Aesir Passage, and its end rooms hold the Malicious Ice that starts the road to Kall Fimbulbringer. The places guide has every creature, chest and find for each place.

Kall Fimbulbringer: reaching the fight

Where the offering comes from, step by step.

Kall Fimbulbringer’s offering is Malicious Blood×3, and it comes from stopping a Jotun Invasion. You start one yourself in the Deep North and it lands in an earlier biome, so the last fight first takes you back to the lands you started in.

  1. Read a vegvisir in Memorial Site or Mörkhalla to mark the Aesir Passage Aesir Passage holds Kall Fimbulbringer’s altar.
  2. Open Mörkhalla with an Intricate Key How to get the key is below.
  3. Break the Malicious Ice in an end room of Mörkhalla “The Jotun Advance”: a Jotun Invasion begins.
  4. Find the invasion in the Meadows, Swamp, Mountains, Black Forest or Plains It appears 1–12 km from the centre of the world.
  5. Destroy its Malicious Ice while it calls Krigen, Hexen and Krigen — Dual Wield
  6. Pick up Malicious Blood×1 Each invasion you stop gives 1. The gate takes 3 and each summon 3.
  7. Offer Malicious Blood×3 at the gate altar of the Aesir Passage
  8. Offer Malicious Blood×3 at the altar inside to summon Kall Fimbulbringer

The Malicious Ice at the heart of an invasion has 1,000 health and takes extra damage from axes, pickaxes and fire, less from frost and lightning and none from poison. While a player is within 120 m it calls a new creature every 50 seconds, until 6 are close by. Up to 3 invasions can run at once. The spawns guide lists what else appears around one.

Getting the Intricate Key

  1. Find Mould: Intricate Key It drops from Elaking and Eyeless One.
  2. Cast Cast: Intricate Key at a Black Forge level 4 It takes 5 Bloodgold and 1 Mould: Intricate Key.
  3. Harden it into an Intricate Key in the Frost Foundry

Hexen can also drop a finished key.

The fight, phase by phase

  1. Kall Fimbulbringer — phase 1 Damage Kall directly · 10,000 health
  2. Kall Fimbulbringer — phase 2 Defeat the summoned boss spirits while Kall is sealed in ice · 7,000 health
  3. Kall Fimbulbringer — phase 3 Damage Kall directly amid summoned tendrils · 30,000 health

The Kall Fimbulbringer page ranks weapons for each phase, and boss order shows where the fight sits in the game.

What beating Kall Fimbulbringer gives you

  1. Defeat Kall Fimbulbringer
  2. Take Crown Jewel
  3. Craft Crown of Valheim at a Black Forge level 4 Wearing it gives Royalty: “The creatures of Valheim will not harm the one who has mastered them.”
  1. Take Sacrificial Blood from Kall Fimbulbringer
  2. Carry it back to the Sacrificial Stones
  3. Place Sacrificial Blood on the Chiselled Platform

His death also stops the Elaking uprising and Krigen army raids.

Questions

Is there anything in the Deep North biome of Valheim?

Yes. In version 1.0.21 the Deep North has 16 creatures, 11 kinds of place including Mörkhalla, and 194 items: 43 weapons, 13 pieces of armor and 22 foods, plus the new stations and its boss, Kall Fimbulbringer.

Will the Deep North have a boss in Valheim?

It has one now: Kall Fimbulbringer, fought in 3 phases. You summon Kall at the Aesir Passage with 3 Malicious Blood, which you get by stopping Jotun invasions.

How do you stop freezing in the Deep North?

Get frost resistance: Fenris Coat, Wolf Fur Cape, Wolf Hide Chestpiece or Frost Resistance Mead. Without it you are only safe by a fire under a roof; a fire alone or shelter alone still leaves you cold.

What is seal blubber used for in Valheim?

It makes Cooked Seal Blubber, Seal Meat Soup and Unbaked Poteitr. It drops from Seal and Baby Seal.

Where do you get a Frozen Branch in Valheim?

From Barka. It goes into Nord Greatsword and Spirit Caller.

What is Solryth for in Valheim?

No recipe uses it: it is a valuable gem that sells for 95 coins at a trader. Find it in Mörkhalla, Shipwreck (Deep North) and Viking Graveyard (Deep North).

What is the Moose Trophy used for in Valheim?

It goes into Headdress of the Caller, Spirit Caller and Neckstabber and builds the Antler Throne. It drops from Moose.

How do you summon Kall Fimbulbringer?

Offer 3 Malicious Blood at the altar inside the Aesir Passage, after opening its gate with 3 more. Each stopped Jotun invasion gives 1.

Weather, status effects, items, recipes, creatures, places and drops come from the game files of build 26249040; the Jotun Invasion, the Malicious Ice, deep snow, the Sacrificial Stones’ platform and the crown’s effect from the main scene and prefabs of build 26249040, read the way the game code uses them.
