Valheim status effects & weather

Rain makes you Wet, nights and cold weather make you Cold, and Mountains snow and the Deep North make you Freezing, which costs health every second. A fire, a roof or frost resistance stops each one. Here is what every weather and survival effect does, exactly, and when the game applies it.

  • 2 minutes Wet lasts after the rain
  • 30 minutes one in-game day
  • 11 minutes 6 seconds between weather changes
  • From the game files Valheim 1.0.21

Questions

How do you stop freezing in Valheim?

Get frost resistance (Frost Resistance Mead, Moder’s Forsaken power, the wolf armor set or gear that resists frost), or stand by a fire or in shelter. With both a fire and shelter you are neither Cold nor Freezing.

How do you stop being wet?

Get under a roof or a shield generator’s dome and wait out the 2 minutes; a fire dries you 11 times as fast.

What does being wet do?

Lower health, stamina and eitr regeneration, resistance to fire and weakness to frost and lightning, and you cannot sleep.

What does encumbered do?

You walk at sneaking speed, cannot run, jump or dodge, and moving drains stamina; out of stamina you cannot move at all.

What does Smoked do?

While your head is in smoke you take damage every second. The game checks every 2 seconds, so it stops soon after you leave the smoke or it clears.

Effect values come from each status effect asset, and the weather from the environment manager and the area lists in game build 26249040. When each effect starts and stops comes from the game code (assembly 9f959c03…). Weather names are the game’s internal names, tidied.
